Tutu Visit Planned

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, will travel to St. Louis on May 18, 2000, to deliver an address and receive the 91´ó»ÆÑ¼-St. Louis Global Citizen Award. His visit will also mark UWC's 40th Anniversary and the longstanding 91´ó»ÆÑ¼/UWC linkage. Detailed plans for this event are under development.


91´ó»ÆÑ¼ Receives Four-Year Telp Linkage Grant

In May, 1999, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ received notification that its USAID Tertiary Educational Linkages Program (TELP) Linkage Grant application had been approved. 91´ó»ÆÑ¼'s linkage partner for the project is the University of the Western Cape. Funding for 91´ó»ÆÑ¼/UWC projects over the four year grant period is expected to total approximately $450,000. 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ will contribute an additional $115,000 in grant matching funding. Included within the overall project are eleven cooperative projects in curriculum development, including four projects in Education, Training and Development, two projects in the area of Health and Wellness, and projects in Environmental Studies, Diversity Studies, Family Studies, and Peace and Conflict Studies.

The projects are:

  1. Problem-based learning and curriculum development in Health Related Professions; Co-leaders, Tyrone Pretorius, UWC, and Rich Oliver, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼C.
  2. Enhancement of graduate programs, faculty training, and research at the School of Dentistry, UWC; Co-leaders, H. Moola, UWC, and J. David Eick, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼KC.
  3. Conflict, violence, and health: Health and wellness curriculum development/staff development; Co-leaders, Elaine Salo, UWC, and George McCall, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SL.

    2000 Exchange Participants Selected

    The 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SAEP Committee met with Professor Jan Persens, UWC Director of International Relations, on December 6, 1999, in St. Louis to select faculty exchange participants for 2000. Projects submitted by the following 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ and UWC faculty were funded:

In addition, Roy Fox, Curriculum & Instruction, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼C, and Greg Arling, Health Administration, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼KC, will complete their 1999-funded projects in 2000. Fox's host is Prevot van der Merwe. Arling's host is Mickey Chopra.


91´ó»ÆÑ¼ Faculty Proposals Invited

91´ó»ÆÑ¼ faculty are invited to submit proposals by July 15, 2000, for 2001 projects under the 91´ó»ÆÑ¼/UWC Linkage Program and the South African Partnerships Program. 


UWC Student Leaders Delegation

A delegation of UWC student leaders visited Missouri November 30 – December 5, 1999. The delegation, which included Ms. Bella Mfenyana, Mr. Sandi Mbu, and Ms. Nkgtheko Mayimele, visited St. Louis, Rolla, and Columbia and engaged in a full day of meetings with student government representatives, faculty, and administrators at each campus.


91´ó»ÆÑ¼/UWC Student Exchange Program

The 91´ó»ÆÑ¼/UWC Student Exchange Program was initiated with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 1997. The program was created to provide partial support for exchange visits by four 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ students (one from each campus) and four UWC students each year. In 1999, five 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ students received Henry Mitchell Scholarships of $1,250 each and travelled to UWC. They are: Jeremy Strohmeyer, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼R; Elizabeth Morris, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼R; Shauna Oppert, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼R; Jane Bauer, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SL, and Thomas Nelson, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼KC. Two additional 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ students are scheduled to study at UWC as Mitchell Scholars during the coming year. They are: Kellie Gist, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼R; and Jordan Macauley, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼R.

The first Mitchell Scholar, Clare Fauke, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼C, completed an academic year at UWC in June, 1999. UWC expects to name its first Mitchell Scholars in 2000.

Comments from or 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ Recent Exchange Visitors

Chuck Korr, Professor of History and Fellow in the Center for International Studies, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SL, reports that his 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SAEP grant enabled him to make three research trips to Cape Town and Pretoria to further his work on the Robben Island project. He has made presentations on the project at DeMontfort University in Leicester, England, at the University of Maine-Orono, and at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Sport History.

K.C. Morrison, Professor of Political Science, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼C: "[My project at UWC and UCT] was an excellent opportunity for developing contacts that will enhance broader linkages between 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ and the nation of South Africa during its transition."

Jenice Prather-Kinsey, Associate Professor of Acountancy, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼C: "The value of this exchange program cannot be overstated. Anyone pursuing research about South Africa will learn from interacting with students and faculty at UWC."

Dr. Pam Nichols, University of the Witwatersrand, commenting on the visit of Prof. Aaron Krawitz, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼C: "Prof. Aaron Krawitz's visit has been extremely helpful in allowing teaching staff across the university to think about the inclusion of writing as a mode of learning in their courses. Prof. Krawitz came at a very opportune time..."


South Africa Partnerships Program

In October, the 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SAEP Committee approved Partnerships Program awards for 2000 to the following 91´ó»ÆÑ¼ faculty members:

  • Jerry Wade, Community Development, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼-Columbia, for a project leading to the development of a Community Development Academy-South Africa in collaboration with MEDICOS, MEDUNSA, and the University of Pretoria.
  • Adrienne Hoard, Fine Art and Curriculum & Instruction, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼-Columbia, to complete a qualitative field study of women painters of the Ndebele nation, in partnership with faculty in the Department of Art History and Visual Art at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Pretoria.
  • Charles Nilon, Fisheries and Wildlife, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼-Columbia, for a project to assist South African Partners, including the Rustenburg District Council and the North West Provincial Parks and Tourism Council in management of wildlife populations, species diversity conservation, and environmental monitoring in parklands, both remote and urban.
  • Antony Okafor and Andrew Otieno, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼-Rolla, for collaborative research in Structural Health Monitoring with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Durban-Westville.
  • William C. Kyle, Jr., Education, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼SL, to assist the University of Durban-Westville in development and initial offering of a PhD program in science education.

    Krawitz Establishes Scholarship Fund at WITS

    Upon returning from his South African Partnerships Program project at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Aaron Krawitz, Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, 91´ó»ÆÑ¼-Columbia, established a bursary at Wits for deserving and needy African students in the field of metallurgy.
